One of Basel's main attractions is its old town which is one of the most intact in Europe. It can be discovered by foot due to the compact size of the city. The market square with the red sandstone town hall (Rathaus), the late (built 1019-1500) Romanesque-Gothic cathedral (Münster) with the Galluspforte, which is considered to be the most important Romanesque sculptural work in Switzerland, the Gates to the Walled City (Spalentor, St. Alban Tor, St. Johann Tor), and many other medieval buildings lining the squares are part of the historic landmarks of the city. Some even date back to the 14th century - the year of construction can often be found above the buildings' doors (as seen in one of the pictures above). Taking a walk through the narrow streets of the old city is definitely a nice way to enjoy this beautiful city!
